| Description |
On a very cold Sunday in February 1996, I paid visits to several privately owned lines in and around Wels and Linz. One network of lines is operated by Stern and Hafferl (StH) who had some very old vintage stock on their books. To get to the start of this branch I took the ÖBB line to Gmunden. From outside the station is a short tramway system (again operated by StH) into the town centre. From there, on foot to the other station, Gmunden Seebf. Seen at Gmunden Seebf on 4 February 1996 is former Basel tram system car no. 23.109 on train 8124, 13:45 to Vorchdorf-Eggenberg. This line was originally standard gauge and non-electrified being operated by ÖBB diesel railcars until the late 1980s. Since then, the line was converted to dual gauge operation (metre gauge for the StH) and electrified at 800V dc. |
