Title
03/598 Medieval book clasp, detail of decoration
Description
English: A wide book clasp; the lower of the two original plates is missing. The clasp tapers inwards slightly, from 26-29mm, towards the hooked end. There are two rivets; that nearest the clasp is extended into a rectangular projection, 11mm high, which projects from the upper surface of the clasp and which is pierced with a circular aperture, probably to hold a closure tie.

The long sides of the upper surface of the clasp are each decorated with a pair of engraved parallel lines with seven punched dots between each pair. Along the edge of each long side are nine notches. The upper surface is further decorated with lines of punched paired and opposed triangles. In the central panel these lines form a herringbone pattern either side of a central spine. On either side of this the lines are arranged in zigzag form and extend over the paired lines as far as the notched edges. The edge adjacent to the missing leather strap is boldly scalloped on either side of a central aperture.
