Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An intricate floor design done in chalk called "kolam" (similar to the pan-Indian artform of rangoli), intricate decorative designs are drawn by the women in chalk or rice flour front of their hut, house or apartment block every morning anew. The designs can be simple or very large and intricate.

They are drawn to invoke prosperity, invitation and welcome of guests.

Traditionally, rice flour was used which provides a meal to ants and other creatures symbolizing harmony.

Kolam is similar to the Indian art form of rangoli (sandpainting) which uses coloured chalks to make intricate patterns for similar purposes of welcome and pride. It is very common in Tamil Nadu, India.
