Summary
[edit]Description0121821 Javari Temple, Khajuraho Madhya Pradesh 077.jpg |
English: The Javari temple is an 11th century Vishnu temple near the Vamana temple. It too is one of the Eastern group monuments of Khajuraho.
This is a relatively small nirandhara temple but elegantly illustrates all sections of Hindu temple architecture. The artwork of this temple resembles the Chaturbhuja temple of the Southern group of Khajuraho monuments. It has three bands of artwork outside, though much is deliberately mutilated. Inside the sanctum is a statue of Vishnu, beautifully proportioned but beheaded. The sikhara of this temple has been partially restored with plain, new material. The temple is called Javari (Jabar, local name for millet) as the temple is midst agricultural field and that is what the locals told the colonial era British surveyors when they asked what is it? The original name of the temple is unknown as no epigraphical evidence has survived or has been discovered so far. |
