Summary
[edit]Description0121821 Chitragupta Temple, Khajuraho 125.jpg |
English: The Chitragupta temple of Khajuraho is dedicated to Surya – the Hindu sun god. It was built in early 11th century, and now a part of the western group of Khajuraho monuments.
The temple reflects the square plan Hindu architecture. It is exquisitely carved outside and inside, though a lot of the artwork survive in mutilated from – beheading, chopped noses, chopped limbs or defacement. The original sikhara was torn down and has been restored with a plain replacement. All Hindu traditions are included in this temple, along with scenes from epics, amorous couples (mithunas), musicians, dancers in classical poses and other decorations. The artwork panels here are similar in some cases to the nearby Jagadambi temple of Khajuraho. The mandapa pillars are fluted and elegantly proportioned, but all the bracket statues are lost. The sanctum doorway has Ganga, Yamuna and three panels of Surya holding lotus at the lintel. Inside the sanctum, is a 7 foot beautifully carved statue of Surya, though it too is damaged. Below his feet are seven horses. |
