Summary
[edit]Description0121321 Vanavasi temple and Dharmashala, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh 10.jpg |
English: The Vanavasi temple and Dharmashala monuments are a part of the Orchha fort complex. They are near the northern tip of the conical island in the Betwa river.
The temple and attached Dharmashala was built in early 17th-century by Raja Veer Singh of the Bundela dynasty. It is named after the Hindu deity Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, during his exile from Ayodhya. The temple faces east, consists of an antarala and a square-plan garbhagriha (sanctum). The sanctum had an idol of Vanvasi Rama, but this idol was moved to the busy Rama Raja temple in town. On top of the sanctum is a Nagara-style sikhara. The temple's simplicity makes it appear closer to traditional Hindu temples. |
