A Shiva temple that once was a part of another 9th-century Hindu monastery

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Chandla temple is the oldest of the surviving monuments in Kadwaya, likely from c. 9th-century.

It is the simplest and was once a part of the Chandla Hindu monastery (Chandal matha). This is likely where the Mattamayura sect of Shaiva tradition expanded into Kadwaha. This expansion was a part of the monastic movement that began with the Shaivite saint Guhavasi or Kadambaguhadhivasi in the 7th century CE. Later, another Hindu monastery was added by these monks in Kadwaya.

The Chandla temple is a bit away, far northwest of other groups of temples.

The Chandla Shiva temple faces east. It has a small mandapa with octagonal pillars. It leads to a garbhagriya. The artwork is relatively plain. The doorway frame has a patrashakha and pushpashakha. Ganga and Yamuna flank the entrance to the sanctum. On lalatabimba is Nataraja,

The temple's pitha is plain. The notable sculptures on the walls include the Surya, Chamunda, and Ganesha. The temple has a sukanasika.
