Summary
[edit]Description0101821 Rama temples complex, Ramgiri hill, Ramtek Maharashtra 031.jpg |
English: The Ram temples complex of Ramtek is the largest group of temples on the Ramagiri hill inside the Ramtek fort, Maharashtra. It is inspired by the Hindu epic Ramayana, and has shrines for many of the central characters in the epic (Rama, Sita, Lakshmana). The complex also has shrines to other Hindu deities. The temples have Nagara Hindu architecture of the Yadav era (8th to 13th century), as well as restorations and additions from the Maratha Bhonsle era (post 17th-century) – in particular, Raghuji Bhonsale. The Marathas added four rings of fort walls around this complex to help protect this site given the targeting of major Hindu pilgrimage sites by the Mughal army.
The Ram mandir complex has many Hindu artwork panels. These are scenes from the Ramayana, Vishnu legends, Vedic legends along with some from the Shiva and Devi traditions of Hinduism. |
