Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Mahavishnu temple of Kodavalam Pullur is a pre-11th-century Vishnu temple with Chera architecture. It is notable for its square plan, monuments and the Pullur Kodavalam stone inscription of 1020 CE wherein the Hindu king Bhaskar Ravi Varma – also known as Manukuladitya – gifted an annual grant of three kalanju of gold for the temple's maintenance and operations. This is the same king who granted land to Cochin Jews along with the freedom to practice Judaism. The Mahavishnu temple is considerably older than the 1020 CE inscription, as it attests that the temple already existed and it received a major grant in gold. The site was likely a Veda pathashala (Vedic school) hub linked to the Tulu Nadu Embrandiris (Udupi) because this site is mentioned in historic regional literature.
