Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Pulpatta Siva temple is an 11th-century Hindu temple in Pulpetta-desam, Malappuram district of Kerala. It is notable for its massive circular-plan two-storey shrine for Shiva. Although in ruins, much has survived to admire this east facing temple. The temple complex has been restored in the 1960s and the mandapam was restored in the 1990s. The adhisthana is made of granite, while the ruined nalambalam and balipitha are of laterite. In addition to the circular shrine, the complex also has two square plan shrines, one for Shiva, other for trident. The octagonal kumuda has an 11th century inscription in Grantha script. The main circular vimana features a Kerala-style sandhara architecture. Thr Pulpatta Shiva temple is a rare surviving Kerala Hindu temple example of co-axial circular sanctum inside a circular vimana. The octagonal roof on the top is also special.
