Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Kaithali Shiva temple at Netirimangalam near Pattambi (Palghat district) is a 9th century monolithic Hindu temple complex, one extensively modified in 10th through 12th centuries. The historic site includes a square plan Shiva temple with signs of damage, a circular plan Krishna temple with a mutilated Vishnu idol, other smaller monuments built pre-14th century, and a namaskara mandapam added in the 20th century.

The Shiva temple faces east, is dvitala (two-storeyed) but one where the lower section is a monolithically engineered from granite in the 9th century. On top, a laterite superstructure was added, likely in the 10th century, with square griva and tiled pyramidal sikhara. The sopanam leads to a mukhamandapam, antarala and then to the square garbhagriyam.

The little round Krishna shrine is north of the Shiva temple, and this is likely from the 10th century as well. The wall design and ornamentations suggest a Pallava contribution or influence, though the lack of deva-koshthas suggest this temple was built by Chera Hindu artisans.

The Kaithali Shiva temple is sometimes referred to as the Pattambi Shiva temple or Netirimangalam Shiva temple.
