Description
English: The Chengannur Mahadeva temple is a pre-11th century Hindu tirtha site near the Pamba river banks (Pampa) in Kerala. It is notable for its circular floor plan and its Bhagavathy and Shiva traditions. Chengannur is the gateway for Sabarimala tradition, and this site is among those that provide services for Sabarimala pilgrims.

The Shiva linga inside the Chengannur Mahadeva temple is gold plated with an image of Ardhanarishwara (half Parvati, half Shiva). Facing the Shiva shrine is the Parvati shrine (Bhagavathy), where the goddess statue is made from an alloy of five metals. The complex has other shrines, such as those for Ganesha, Sastha (Ayyappan), Krishna, goddess Ganga, Chandikeswaran and others. The temple is historically known for its Thriputharattu Utsavam (festival) of fertility, one that links it to the periodic menstruation of goddess Parvati.

The Chengannur Mahadeva temple complex includes a Kerala-style gopuram gateway, a copper clad circular plan vimana, a nalambalam, several mandapam and other elements of Kerala Hindu temples.
