Summary
[edit]Description0081423 Jain temples of Abhapur, Polo forest, Gujarat 112.jpg |
English: Abhapur is a village midst the Polo Forest in Sabarkantha district of northern Gujarat, near the Rajasthan border. Set near the Harnav river, Abhapur and nearby region were a part of a major prosperous town mentioned in the pre-10th century Sanskrit texts. It became more important when Parihar kings of Idar built a trading city in the 10th-century and named it "Pol" (literally, "gate") as it was the gateway to trade with northern India. Rathod Rajputs found refuge in this city and forests in the 15th-century. Since ancient times, Abhapur attracted monasteries and temples – both Jain and Hindu. The city and temples were damaged during the Sultanate era, and the ruins of these temples as well as the lost city are scattered over 50 square kilometers.
To the north of Harnav river is a group of Jain temples in ruin. They are notable for their beautiful carvings and numerous distinctive jali-motifs. |
