| Description |
English: The Kankaleshwar temple, also known as Kyunkaleshwar mandir, is a pre-10th century Shiva temple on a hill to the west of Pauri town in Uttarakhand. The site is claimed to be 8th century by the state archaeology department and local legends state that Adi Shakara visited this temple in 8th-century.
The site has a collection of old statues and temple parts, as well as some of the items discovered in excavations in Pauri area. This includes artwork typically associated with early Kerala Hindu style, as well as those typically found in 16th century Vijayanagar – probably brought by South Indian pilgrims to the Himalayas. The old statues are those of Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Ganesha, Kartikeya and others. The site has sweeping views of the central Himalayas and Alaknanda valley. |
