[edit]Description0051523 Champavati temple, Chamba, Himachal Pradesh 009.jpg |
English: The Champavati temple is an 11th-century Hindu goddess temple dedicated to Durga Mahisasuramardini in Chamba, northern Himachal Pradesh. The historic name of this early Hindu capital in the Himalayas was Champaka, likely from the abundant Champaka flowering trees with fragrant saffron-yellow flowers and a wood popular for building temples and homes. Over time the Champaka town came to be called Chamba. The Champavati temple is near the historic royal palace.
The Champavati temple and Chamba kingdom legends are mentioned in the Himalayan Hindu manuscript Vamsavali. It mentions that this temple was built in memory of a brave princess who was dedicated to Durga. The temple is made of stone, has elaborate artwork and numerous aedicules above niches. The mandapa in front has a square plan, has carved wooden pillars, but its walls and roof have been replaced in modern times. |
