Shangchul Mahadev – the wooden tower temple from a distance

| Description |
English: The Shanghchul Mahadev temple is a wooden tower temple dedicated to Shiva. It is located in the Great Himalayan National Park midst the Sainj valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. Legends link it to the Pandavas of the Mahabharata.
The Shanghchul Mahadev temple premises are spread over a large area across meadows. It has many mandapas along the way, small shrines, and the towering temple is in the small village of Shangarh reach via a hiking trail overlooking rolling hills. The temple tower has four stories, with sweeping views from the top. The entrance has a beautifully carved door, with one sakha showing the Vishnu Dasavatara, the lalitabimba has Ganesha, and above on the lintel is a large carving of Shiva as yogi. Other artwork in the temple are those of Durga and Vedic deities. The current temple was rebuilt in the modern era after fire destroyed the temple and nearby structures. The historic surviving items are the statues and artwork in stone. |
