Summary
[edit]Description0012523 Siddheshwar temple, Palari, Chhattisgarh 148.jpg |
English: A 7th to 8th-century brick temple and its ruins survive in Palari a village about 75 kilometers northeast of Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Known as Siddeshwar temple of Palari, it is notable for its simple spire with rounded upper region, life-size reliefs of goddess Ganga and Yamuna at the sanctum's entrance, relief showing Shiva's wedding and another of Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh.
The temple has a square plan, its outer walls are carved to depict Hindu legends, and the temple stands next to a small lake. The architectural features such as its gavaska are also notable, just as the numerous pre-7th century versions found in ruins and temples of Malhar (Mallar) village southeast of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. For more details about this temple, see Donald M. Stadtner (1981), The Siddhesvara Temple at Palāri and the Art of Kosala during the Seventh and Eighth Centuries, Ars Orientalis, Vol. 12, pp. 49-56 (Freer Gallery of Art, The Smithsonian Institution) |
