Summary
[edit]Description0012023 Nagra Brick Temple, Chandanitola Gondia Maharastra 244.jpg |
English: The Nagra Brick temple is the remains of a large 5th-century Vakataka era Hindu temple complex in Nagra village, about 6 kilometers north of Gondia city in northeast Maharashtra. This is a region near Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh borders.
The Brick temple of Nagra is similar to other large Hindu temple complexes such as the Mansar complex north of Nagpur, which too was built by the Vakatakas in the 4th to 5th century CE (the Vakatakas are better known for the Ajanta Buddhist Caves and Ramtek Hindu monuments). The Nagra Brick temple is smaller than the massive Hindu temples complex in Mansar, but it is still large enough to appear in satellite photographs of northeast Maharashtra. The jagati is made entirely of bricks, and it is about 1100 square meters (42 meter x 26 meters). Multi-tiered, it has steps from one level to the next. On its top are mandapa cell spaces. At the very top are lower part of a sanctum with a Shiva linga (Vakatakas were a Shaiva Hindu dynasty). The sides of the platform show moulded pillars and a structure that would have supported a large Hindu temples complex. Excavations of this site has yielded Hindu sculpture and panels, which are now in Nagpur museum. The Nagra Brick temple is a Maharashtra state protected site.
