ntsof resemblance in the Gothic art of all the nor-thern nations While the Perpendicular is essen-tially the English Gothic, French Gothic tracerydeveloped into the flamboyant. This Flamboyant is the intermediate form be-tween the French Decorated of the fourteenth,and the Renaissance style of the sixteenth century,and is contemporary with our Perpendicular work.With the exceptions of some wooden screens andstall-work in the North of England, as in thechurches of Hexham and Jarrow, and in some ofthe carved wooden chests retained in our churches(all of which are apparently of foreign workmanship),and of an occasional instance such as the windowsof the Monastery at Rye, the style found Httle orno favour in England, although something ap-proaching it may be seen in Scotland, whereFrench builders were frequently employed, in the *So called from its Jla?ne-like appearance, producing formswhich resemble elongated tongues of flame.
