Our #conservationlands15 celebration continues tomorrow with trails to blaze on the BLM’s National Conservation Lands. We preview the journey today, when in 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition started westward on the Missouri River. The journey included stops along the now BLM-managed Pompeys Pillar and Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in Montana. Stand in the footsteps of the legendary explorer, William Clark. On July 25, 1806, William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, visited Pompeys Pillar and carved his name and the date onto the rock. Today these inscriptions are the only remaining visible on-site physical evidence of the entire Lewis and Clark Expedition. Along with Clark’s signature, Pompeys Pillar boasts a state-of-the art interpretive center, a variety of educational programs and an interpretive trail system along which visitors can enjoy the natural and cultural history of the site. If you're a history buff or just interested in enjoying a day on the majestic Yellowstone River, you won't want to miss this stop.
