English: CWGC gravestone for Private Albert Harris in the town cemetery of Cromer, Norfolk. Private Albert Harris died on the 12 November 1917. Albert was from Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia. His wife was Ada Harris who in 1917 lived at 478, Union St., West Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. Albert was born in Benalla, and was the son to Catherine and William Harris. After the outbreak of the First World War, He had left Melbourne after enlisting on the 14 January 1916. He embarked on the troop transport ship Euripides A14 and was killed 10 months later in leaving Australia. He had been injured in France on the 12 October 1917. He had been wounded in the left leg and his Tibia was fractured. Gas gangrene in the leg made it necessary to amputate his left leg on the 14 October. He was shipped to the United Kingdom and admitted to the Red House Auxiliary Hospital at Halsey House in Cromer, Norfolk. On admission his stump was found to be free from infection and healing. However, his kidneys had become infected and were making him drowsy and weak. This uraemia of the kidneys caused him to die peacefully on the 12 November. |
