[edit]Description-2020-09-19 Memorial to Elizabeth and Robert Britiffe, Parish church of Saint Margaret, Thorpe Market.JPG |
English: Church of Saint Margaret, Thorpe Market, Norfolk, mural monument to Elizabeth Rant (1672-1712) and her husband Robert Britiffe (c.1666-1749), (or Brightiffe) of Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, a lawyer and Whig Member of Parliament who sat in the House of Commons from 1715 to 1734 and served as Recorder of Norwich in 1737–1743. She was his second wife, and was a daughter (and heiress, from the position of her arms) of Sir William Rant of Thorpe Market, Norfolk, by his wife Elizabeth. Arms: Britiffe (Argent, a chevron engrailed between three escallops sable) (not listed in Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884) with inescutcheon of pretence of Rant (Ermine, on a fess sable three lions rampant or) (Burke, p.839).
Possibly a son of Robert Britiffe was Edmund Britiffe (1700-1770), Esquire, Paymaster of His Majesty's Exchequer Bills, whose heraldic ledger stone survives in St Lawrence's Church, Hunworth, Norfolk, and shows clearly the arms: A chevron engrailed between three escallops (Argent, a chevron engrailed between three escallops sable per Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol.2, 1889, p.12 [1]). There exist several ledger stones of the Britiffe family in Baconsthorpe Church. (see Farrer, p.12). |
