Description
English: Premier Richard John Seddon addressing the crowd at the opening of the Memorial Clocktower in Hokitika on 3 June 1903. Hokitika Museum Photo #003327 From the West Coast Times: "The Hokitika Memorial Town Clock was unveiled by Mrs Seddon on 3 June 1903, a perfect sunny day, with a crowd of 5000 people present. The Seddon party arrived by train, greeted by the Mayor, Mr HL Michel and Councillors, and officers and corps of the Nelson and West Coast battalion. Amongst the official party were Major-General Babbington, commander of New Zealand Forces, several high-ranking officials, Surgeon-Captain Ebenezer Teichelmann, and members of Seddon’s family, including his son Captain Dick Seddon who was a Boer War veteran. The First Westland Rifles were present under the leadership of Captain McFarlane and Lieutenant MacGregor."
