Description |
The Republican elephant, labelled N.Y. G.O.P, looks nervously behind him where William Randolph Hearst is seen as a farmer sneaking up with a bucket, which is labelled Hearst O.K. The bucket has a rope tied to the handle, and Hearst appears to be about to tie the rope to the elephant's tail. The elephant is eating hay from a stack labelled Old Guard Opposition Fodder. The New York Times reported on October 4 that when the state convention of the Independence League was held the following day, the League's nominations for New York State offices were expected to be Henry L. Stimson for Governor, and William Randolph Hearst for Lieutenant Governor. The caption reads 'Wouldn't It Make An Elephant Cross After Fattening On the Opposition Of the Old Guard To Have This Tied To Him?' |
