English: The Cultural Heritage Administration (Director Jeong Jae-sook) announced the promotion of Gyeongsangbuk-do Monument No. 21, Retusa fringetree colony in Uichang-eup (designated on December 30, 1975), under the new name Pohang Heunghaehyanggyo Retusa fringetree colony.
It is said that the Retusa fringetree colony near Heunghaehyanggyo Local Confucian School and Imheosa Temple in Okseong-ri, Heunghae-eup, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, was created by the fall of seeds of Retusa fringetrees planted to commemorate the construction of the local Confucian school. In particular, the white flowers in full bloom in May have great historical and landscape value, such as harmonizing with surrounding Hyanggyo and temples to show beautiful scenery. In addition, since ancient times, there have been many and few flowers of Retusa fringetrees in the shape of white rice, so they are highly related to the culture of ancestors, such as predicting the good and bad harvests of farming per year, so it is of great folk and cultural value.
26 Retusa fringetree trees with an average chest height of 2.73m and an average tree height of 12.5m are naturally distributed around Hyanggyo and the temple, with 23 weeks in the eastern hills and 3 weeks along the wall of Hyanggyo to the west. In addition, since 1991, the Retro-Pop Flower Festival is held every May under the supervision of the Heunghae Retro-Pop Youth Association, and Retro-pop trees are planted throughout Pohang. Currently, the number of Retusa fringetrees designated as natural monuments is six old and one colony, and the Heunghae Retusa fringetrees colony maintains the best growth condition among them, and is also good in terms of tree shape and size. |
