Description
한국어: 모란 백한 흉배를 부착한 흑색 단령에 삽은대와 사모를 착용하고 교의에 앉은 좌안칠분면의 전신좌상이다. 얼굴 오른쪽 옆 화면에 작은 해서로 ‘계곡 장유선생 초상(谿谷 張維先生 肖像)’이라고 써 있어, 조선 중기의 문신 장유의 초상화로 알려져 왔다. 장유는 37세에 정사공신이 되었는데, 초상화가 다소 늦게 그려졌다고 해도 흰 수염이 상당히 난 얼굴 모습을 30대 후반으로 보기에는 무리가 있다. 이상의 점으로 미루어 볼 때 <장유 초상>은 정사공신상이 아닐 가능성이 매우 높다. 선이 경직되거나 일률적이지 않고 부위에 따라 여러 단계의 선묘를 구사한 점 등은 이 초상화를 이모본(移模本)보다는 원본에 가깝다는 인상을 준다. 17세기 중반 이후 공신상 형식을 따라 그린 초상화이거나, 시기적으로 다른 여러 모티프가 복합적으로 그려진 후대의 이모본인 것으로 생각해 볼 수 있겠다. 제작 시기에 대해서는 담갈색 선으로 도드라지지 않게 얼굴 세부의 외곽을 그리고 부분적으로 홍염과 묵염을 살짝 가하여 입체감을 표현하는 방식으로 보아 17세기를 넘어가지 않을 것으로 여겨진다.
