中文（臺灣）：蘭陽平原舊稱噶瑪蘭，原為平埔族噶瑪蘭人聚居之地。在十六、七世紀間，陸續有海盜、西班牙人和荷蘭人等來此做短暫停留，後雖零星有漢人到此從事小規模的交易，但真正的有規模的移墾定居者，是在1796年(嘉慶元年)率眾至蘭陽平原武裝拓墾的福建漳州人吳沙，他們初始進至烏石港以南，便佔地築土為城，建立首墾的第一個據點，稱「頭城」，自此展開了蘭陽平原的快速開發。1812年宜蘭地區設立噶瑪蘭廳於五圍三結街（今宜蘭市），為避免與廳治衝突而將頭城之名改為「頭圍」，清治、日治初期皆稱頭圍堡；1920年(大正九年)宜蘭改為三郡時稱「頭圍庄」，隸屬宜蘭郡，確認了現今轄區規模。光復後復名「頭城鎮」，並調整轄內各莊為24個里。「頭城」在宜蘭開發史上有著「開蘭第一城」的歷史地位，也是台灣東部發展史的重要起點，有其不可磨滅與取代的價值與意義。 |
