中文（臺灣）：在化學纖維尚未發明或普及的年代，漁撈作業所使用的網具，都是天然材質（主要為棉、麻）所製作。類此天然植物纖維製作的網具，在反覆浸泡於海水、曝曬於烈日的使用過程中，很容易破損或裂解；也因此，昔日以網具撈捕為漁法的南方澳多數船隻，每年都必須將漁網以薯榔汁液浸染一次。 　　薯榔為一種多年生爬藤植物，常可見於台灣中低海拔之平地或山區。該植物可用來染色的部分，其實是它的地下塊莖。其形大致與芋頭相似而更顯不規則狀，有些則比芋頭來得碩大。 切開薯榔塊莖，可見其莖肉呈現赭紅色。將之切塊刨絲、搾出汁液，則可拿來染布、染漁網。為什麼先民─特別是漁民─要以之做為染料使用？除了其本身具有天然色素外，最主要的原因，還是由於薯榔塊莖富含膠質和丹寧，可增加植物纖維的強韌度，使得漁網較不易破損、更加強韌耐用。 　　然漁撈所使用的網具，現已多改用尼龍等化學纖維製作，所以「漁港薯榔染」的例行作業早不復有。而一般農家，也已無將衣衫染色以防髒汙的需求了，所以除了少數專事植物染創作的工藝活動外，「薯榔染」在台灣並不常見。倒是在中國大陸廣東一帶，仍保有一種高級織品「香雲紗」的製作技術；「香雲紗」又稱「莨綢」，(節錄)
