Introduction to Neighborhood Relics of Tang and Song Dynasties at Jiangnanguan Street
The Neighborhood Relics of Tang and Song Dynasties at Jiangnanguan Street are located in Jinjiang District, Chengdu, to the west of Shamao Street, east of Hongxing Pedestrian Street, south of Shudu Avenue, and north of Jiangnanguan Street. The Relics cover an area of about 54,000m2, appr. 300m from north to south and 180m from east to west in length. The excavation lasted from December 2007 to October 2008, with an excavated area of 4,800 m2, where the remains of Tang and Song Dynas-ties are the most abundant. The unearthed relics include 16 drainage channels, 4 brick roads, 4 earth branch roads, and 21 house foundations of Tang and Song Dynas-ties, and 1 road, 8 house foundations, and 3 wells of Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as large quantities of porcelain, pottery, bone artifacts, and coins. The current relic display area is rectangular, 52m in length, 22m in width, and 2m in depth.
The scientific planning and rational layout of major and minor roads, houses, and drainage system within the relics have indicated that Chengdu already enjoyed a high level of urban planning, construction and management in Tang and Song Dynasties. The Relics were listed as one of the "Top 10 New Archaeological Discoveries in China"in 2008; in May 2013, the Relics were announced to be the 7th batch of key historical site under state protection by the State Council.
