Description
中文（臺灣）：『旗山天后宮』是本地的主廟，旗山人稱為『媽祖廟』，是本地開莊的市集、信仰、精神等活動中心，亦是凝聚社區意識與聚落發展的樞紐。研究台灣各聚落之文史工作，常以各地之主廟探考，以了解其形成與發展，目前列為高雄市定古蹟。 西元1700年(距今300多年前)，先民為求平安與心靈寄託，至大陸湄洲恭請媽祖聖尊至蕃薯寮(旗山舊稱)，供奉於旗山福德祠旁。地方人士參拜聖蹟靈驗，於清嘉慶二十二年(1817年)由地方官員、仕紳與商家等共同出資於現址開始興建廟宇，清道光四年(1824 年)落成，距今近200年歷史。
