Summary

[edit]
Description
中文(繁體):北島褐鷸鴕(Apteryx australis)標本,臺北市中正區城內次分區黎明里(臺北城內石坊街)
English: During the evolution of birds, a unique group, known as ratites, lost the ability to freely fly through the air, resulting in a terrestrial lifestyle that is more familiar to us. They include ostriches, emus, and kiwi birds. Compared with birds that fly, the major difference is in their sternum. In flying birds, the sternum has a well-developed keel structure, while in ratites, the keel is not well or not at all developed. Therefore, there is no place for the larger number of muscles needed for flight to attach, resulting in the loss of flying ability.
