Summary
English: As an experimental project in urban housing, the architect Moshe Safdie experimented with the use of housing units prefabricated in facotries to lower construction costs, while also comtemplating the possibility of integrating the suburban lifestyle of having gradens into city life. By combining 354 idnetial units in different manners by connecting them with steel cables and setting up balconies and gardens in the gaps created by stacking the units, the comfort of the residents could be enhanced. This innovative design formed the Canada pavilion during Expo 67 Montreal and drew the attention of the world. Even though this ideal proved too expensive to build, and the subsequent maintenance costs were staggering, but Habitat 67 is used as housing to this day. It still had significant influence on international housing plans that followed in its wake. |
