調理されたムラサキイガイ類 ムラサキイガイを使ったパエリア食材としてはムール貝と呼ばれ、主にヨーロッパ各地の料理で利用される。特にフランス料理、イタリア料理、スペイン料理など、南ヨーロッパで多用される。また、ベルギーのムール貝料理が有名。元々日本には生息しない貝でもあり、和食ではあまり利用されていないが、瀬戸内海で収穫されるイガイを瀬戸貝と呼び炊き込みご飯などにすることがある。 旬は、貝が肥える春から夏にかけてである。

[編集] 中毒 ムラサキイガイは二枚貝のうちでも貝毒を蓄積しやすく、麻痺や下痢などの食中毒を起こすことが多い。日本国内の場合、商品として出荷されるものは検査体制が確立しているため、売られているものを食べる場合は危険性が少ないが、天然のものを捕獲して食用とする場合は注意が必要である。貝毒は4月から5月にかけて発生しやすいと言われる。
