The ratio √2 = a / b = 2b / a. Also, one-half of √2 is the same as the reciprocal of √2. √2 / 2 = (√2 × √2) / (2 × √2) = 2 / (2 × √2) = 1 / √2 So when you halve it, you get the same ratio but the sideways version... like when you halve an A4 paper, you get A5 paper Similarly, doubling A4 paper gets you A3 (made of 4 x A5 paper). 2 × √2 = 2 × √2 × √2 / √2 = 2 × 2 / √2 = 4 / √2 |
