Botanical name - Leucas aspera,Spreng. Variety- This is Siru thumpai(‘small thumpai’),others being –Malaith thumpai(‘mountain thumpai’),Karunthumpai(‘black thumpai’) ,Kasiththumpai(‘thumpai of kasi’);Widely used in Tamil Siddha medical system for the cure of cough etc.,;Mentioned in Tamil Sangkam literatures-PathiRRuppaththu(14-8 ),Kurinjippattu(90) etc., . ‘As white as thumpai flower’ – is a common simile in Tamil .
