বাংলা: পাট তন্তু জাতীয় উদ্ভিদ। পাটগাছের ছাল থেকে পাটের আঁশ সংগ্রহ করা হয়। আমাদের দেশে পাটকে সোনালি আঁশও বলা হয়। কারণ পাটের আঁশের রঙ সোনালি এবং বাংলাদেশের রফতানি আয়ের ২৫ শতাংশ আসে এ থেকে। পাট থেকে বিভিন্ন প্রকার পাটজাত দ্রব্য উৎপাদন হয়ে থাকে। যেমন- সুতা, থলি, চট, দড়ি, সুতলি। পাট দ্বারা বিভিন্ন প্রকার পর্দা, কার্পেট, জায়নামাজ, ত্রিপল, গালিচা, গদি, শিঁকা, আসন, পাটখড়ি, কাগজ, পারটেক্স, হার্ডবোর্ড তৈরি হয়।
বিশ্বে মোট ১৮.৮৮ লাখ হেক্টর জতিতে পাট চাষ হয় এবং ৩২ লাখ মেট্রিক টন পাট উৎপাদন হয়। প্রতি হেক্টর জমিতে পাট উৎপাদন ১ হাজার ৬৫৬ কেজি। পাট উৎপাদনে বিশ্বে এশিয়া মহাদেশই প্রথম। বিশ্বে ৯৫ শতাংশ পাট এশিয়ায় জন্মে। পাট উৎপাদনে বাংলাদেশ বিশ্বে প্রথম। কিন্তু মেস্তা জাতীয় পাট উৎপাদনে বাংলাদেশ দ্বিতীয়। ২০০৪ সালের এক সমীক্ষায় দেখা গেছে, ৮.৩৩ লাখ মেট্রিক টন পাট বাংলাদেশে উৎপাদন হয়। বিশ্বে এর উৎপাদনের হার ২৬.০২ শতাংশ। এ সময় ৫ লাখ ১ হাজার হেক্টর জমিতে পাট উৎপাদন করা হয়। এবং হেক্টরপ্রতি উৎপাদন ছিল ১ হাজার ৬২৩ কেজি।
