English: L'intérieur de l'amphithéâtre d'El Jem, depuis la partie supérieure des gradins restaurés
L'amphithéâtre d'El Jem a été construit sous le règne de Gordien (proconsul de la province d'Afrique) vers 230-238 après J.C. Il est resté inachevé. Situé dans la ville romaine de Thysdrus, sa capacité d'accueil était de près de 27 000 spectateurs. Sa taille révèle la richesse de cette région qui produisait de l'huile d'olive exportée à Rome. L'amphithéâtre d'El Jem était un des plus grands de l'Empire romain. Sa longueur était de 148 m, sa largeur de 122 m et sa hauteur de 36 m. L'arène mesurait 64m par 39 m. Il était au 3ème rang parmi les grands amphitéâtres, après Rome et Vérone. Il s'y déroulait des combats de gladiateurs et des combats avec des fauves. Après les romains, l'édifice servit de forteresse aux berbères, notamment lors de la conquête arabe. Situé dans une plaine au centre de la Tunisie, cet amphithéâtre, construit entièrement en pierre de taille, n’est ni creusé ni adossé à une colline.
