Summary
English: This structure is the only one of its kind in the Land of Israel west of Jordan, which has survived in its entirety from the Roman period. The building was preserved due to the fact that it was used for a long period of time as a Muslim place of prayer called "Makam a-Nabi Yahya". The building, which is 4.8 meters high, is built in the shape of a square room and contains the remains of sarcophagi that were apparently intended for spouses. Its ceiling is made of limestone slabs supported by two arches. Its thick walls and small windows keep it at a constant temperature. The facade of the mausoleum facing north is made up of a wide gate divided into three entrances by two columns. At the top of the columns are Corinthian capitals, and above them a stylized cornice. Another room is located on the south side of the building and contains a columbarium containing sixty niches |
