Phoenix dactylifera, широко відомий як фінікова пальма, — це вид квіткової рослини з сімейства пальмових Arecaceae, який культивують заради їстівних солодких плодів — фініків. Вид широко культивується в Північній Африці, на Близькому Сході та в Південній Азії, а також натуралізований у багатьох тропічних і субтропічних регіонах по всьому світу. Фінікові дерева досягають 30 метрів у висоту, ростуть поодиноко або утворюють купу з кількома стеблами з однієї кореневої системи. Вони повільно ростуть і можуть досягати віку понад 100 років при правильному догляді. Плоди фініків (фініки) мають овально-циліндричну форму, довжину від 3 до 7 сантиметрів і близько 2,5 см в діаметрі, колір яких варіюється від темно-коричневого до яскраво-червоного або жовтого, залежно від сорту. Містять 61–68% цукру за масою у висушеному вигляді, фініки дуже солодкі, їх можна використовувати як десерти самостійно або в кондитерських виробах. Існують археологічні докази вирощування фініків в Аравії з 6-го тисячоліття до нашої ери. Загальне щорічне світове виробництво фініків становить 8,5 мільйонів тонн, найбільшими виробниками та споживачами є країни Близького Сходу та Північної Африки. Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as the date palm, is a flowering-plant species in the palm family, Arecaceae, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit called dates. The species is widely cultivated across northern Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, and is naturalized in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Date trees reach up to 100 feet in height, growing singly or forming a clump with several stems from a single root system. Slow-growing, they can reach over 100 years of age when maintained properly. Date fruits (dates) are oval-cylindrical, 1 to 3 in long, and about 1 in in diameter, with colour ranging from dark brown to bright red or yellow, depending on variety. Containing 61–68 percent sugar by mass when dried, dates are very sweet and are enjoyed as desserts on their own or within confections. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in Arabia from the 6th millennium BCE. The total annual world production of dates amounts to 8.5 million metric tons, countries of the Middle East and North Africa being the largest producers and consumers.
