Earwigs are found throughout the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, Australia and New Zealand, about 2,000 species. Earwigs are mostly nocturnal and often hide in small, moist crevices during the day, and are active at night, feeding on a wide variety of insects and plants. Word «earwig» in different languages mean "Pierce ears" or something similar. It is a common myth that earwigs crawl into the human ear and lay eggs in the brain. Despite the menacing appearance earwig can not harm humans directly. Forceps are not strong enough to injure the skin and it can not bite or transmit disease. Earwigs are among the few non-social insect species that show maternal care. Unlike most insects, the female keeps the eggs and nymphs have hatched and feeding the same month and a half, until they are on their own. |
