Часовня впервые упоминается в писцовой книге 1685 г. В 1748 г. она сгорела, но в 1766 г. была отстроена из камня, «а в ней образа Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы».

В 1878-1879 гг. обветшавшая часовня была перестроена по новому плану, составленному губернским архитектором Бетюцким, на средства церковного старосты купца Артемова и «пожертвования торговцев Пятницкой улицы и толкучего рынка».

Часовня была построена в русском стиле и представляла собой как бы маленький бесстолпный храм с несколькими рядами закомар (вид кирпичной кладки) и изящным завершением в виде барабанчика и луковичной главки. Часовня уникальна для Тулы. В 2009 г. завершение часовни было отреставрировано.

Известный тульский мастер Виктор Авдюшев восстановил старинную кладку закомар, вручную обтачивая каждый кирпич. Осенью 2009 г засиял позолотой куполок часовни.
