В 1808 году к епископу Тульскому и Белевскому Амвросию обратились священник церкви Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы Никифор Ильин и церковный староста - тульский купец Феодосии Киреев с прошением: - «С согласия прихожан на церковные деньги построить при Покровской церкви ограду, состоящую из ворот, трех башенок с внутренними палатками, караулки и часовни». Проект был воплощен в жизнь. Шесть палаток - торговых лавок - выходили на улицу Пятницкую и были одним из источников доходов церкви. Последним владельцем каменных торговых лавок являлся причетник Покровской церкви С. И. Полюбин. (Причетник – низший служитель в православной церкви - псаломщик, дьячок). Рядом с часовней - строение № 9, кажущееся странным каменным забором с колоннами и заложенными кирпичом арками. На самом деле это единственная уцелевшая стена торговых лавок. От некогда красивого и солидного каменного здания остались одни неприглядные развалины.

    Комплекс построек Покровской церкви (здания храма, часовни, торговых лавок) является памятником истории и культуры федерального значения. Он был поставлен на госохрану в 1995 году как памятник архитектуры ХVIII века.
