Description

English: Zurla is a Macedonian folk wind instrument made of walnut or plum wood. It consists of two parts, a conical tube and a star that is inserted into the upper end.

The barrel has seven holes and one burning hole on the back, as well as exhaust holes at the bottom and a disc reed at the top. When playing, the stick is held with both hands at an angle of ~45° to the field of vision. The fingers of the left hand work the lower four holes, while the fingers of the right work the upper holes and the palm hole. The flattened cane is placed whole in the mouth, and the lips are touched with the metal disc (honeycomb) which helps the cheek muscles. Playing this instrument requires a circular breathing technique.

The zurla plays two octaves from the natural scale and has a characteristic, very loud and penetrating sound and is almost always accompanied by drums, the standard combination is two zurla and two drums and the zurla repertoire consists of dances, which are performed at weddings, holidays or send-offs
