Summary
Platanus Orientalis.jpg |
English: The sycamore (Platanus orientalis) is a large forest tree up to 40 meters tall and up to 3 meters thick. The bark peels off in thin, irregular scales that fall off, giving it a mottled appearance. Very often, in the lower part of the stem, the bark cracks in the form of deeper irregular small plates. Buds are conical and up to 9 mm long, covered by a single covering shell, which is completely covered by the base of the petiole, which is why they are visible after leaf fall. The leaf blade is up to 20 cm wide, deeply cut into 5-7 parts and with a wedge-shaped base. The petiole is up to 7 cm long. In terms of its shape, the leaves do not differ from short and long-growing ones. Blooming occurs simultaneously with leafing, which occurs during April. The flowers are collected in globose inflorescences, arranged male and female around axes, with the axes with male and female flowers separate. After flowering, the male inflorescences dry and fall off, and the female inflorescences develop into globular inflorescences and ripen in the autumn of the same year. Their number along each axis is 2-8, and on average 3-4. They disintegrate at the beginning of spring, the following year. |
