Description
English: In the photos of the ciliates Paramecium bursaria, they contain the symbiotic algae. Algae give the ciliate oxygen and carbohydrates, and the ciliate supplies them with carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds. What happens if the algae stops performing its functions during a long stay in the dark? After a day in the dark, the ciliates completely switch to self-feeding, but in the future it makes no sense to completely eat on your own if you have a lot of food in your body. And now the ciliator begins to slowly digest its useless symbionts, a significant decrease in the amount of algae became noticeable after 7 days in the dark. The photos show how the amount of algae decreases over time. After that, one gets the feeling that this is not just a symbiosis, but the ciliates grows food for itself.
English: The ciliates of Paramecium bursaria digest symbionts.
