JPEG file comment | http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/16804/lot/18/ Attributed to Ilya Efimovich Repin (Russian, 1844-1930) A French soldier oil on canvas 55 x 44cm Footnotes In May 1873, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and winning a gold medal, Repin was awarded a scholarship to travel to France. En route, he visited Austria and Italy where he saw masterpieces by Michelangelo, Veronese, Titian and Tintoretto for the first time. In Paris Repin painted hundreds of sketches and studies of Parisian life and street scenes. Dr. Elizabeth Valkenier, Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University and the author of Ilya Repin and the World of Russian Art, has suggested that the present work could have been painted around 1874 when Repin was assembling various French types in preparation for his large work 'Paris Cafe' completed in 1875 (now in a private collection). Although this figure is missing from the final painting, it is very likely that it was painted as a preparatory sketch for that work. Dozens of sketches drawn from life on the streets of Paris were never included in the final version of the painting but they constitute an important part of Repin's work in their own right, reflecting a great stylistic shift that took place in the artist's oeuvre while he was in working in France. We would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Valkenier for her help in preparing this catalogue note. |
