Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Daphnia with ephippium. Oblique lighting. Usually Daphnia reproduce by parthenogenesis, that is, without the help of males, and from the eggs there are females who are clones of the mother. Thus, the entire population of Daphnia consists of females. But when cold weather or drought sets in, these eggs develop into males that fertilize the females. After that, an ephippium with resting eggs begins to form inside the female. Ephippium has thick walls that can protect eggs from freezing, drying out, and digestion. When favorable conditions occur, females emerge from resting eggs, which continue to reproduce by parthenogenesis.
English: Daphnia with ephippium.
