Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In the picture there are bushes of red bilberry. The photo was taken in the middle of July near the city of Kandalaksha in the Murmansk region. Pay attention to the color of the bush in the background. Why is it red?

As you can see, the red bush grows right under the remains of the fallen tree so that sunlight does not fall at all. The fact is that unlike the green bush in which chlorophyll biosynthesis takes place, another pigment is synthesized in its red neighbor - the anthocyanin, which, as a rule, is produced in plants under stressful conditions.

Stress for the plant in this case could be caused by the absence of sunlight.
