Description
English: Storks together with swallows are the first signs of the beginning of a new season, in our country, you can meet two types of stork, the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and the black stork (Ciconia nigra). Although these are two very close species, they still have different ecology and unlike the white stork, the black stork is much less likely to be found in open spaces. It prefers to live in quiet wooded areas and makes its nests away from urban and rural environments, on high treetops or rocks, similar to vultures. In contrast, the white stork has adapted to life with and near people, using human building as a place to place their nests. That is why the white stork is a common bird in our country, especially in rural, low-lying parts and through the valleys. According to the last census conducted for this species in 2015-16, in Macedonia there are 817 active stork nests in which a total of 3,661 storks live.
