Español: Últimos momentos de Diego Portales (Santiago, 16 de junio de 1793 — Valparaíso, 6 de junio de 1837) fue un político chileno, comerciante y ministro de Estado, una de las figuras fundamentales de la organización política de su país. Personaje controvertido, es visto por muchos como el Organizador de la República y por otros, como un dictador tiránico.
Lideró políticamente las fuerzas conservadoras en la Guerra Civil de 1829-1830 y, tras rehusar la presidencia de la República, colaboró con el gobierno de Joaquín Prieto aplicando duras medidas, que incluían destierros y fusilamientos de los opositores al régimen, para imponer el orden. Vio en la creación de la Confederación Perú-Boliviana una amenaza para Chile, por lo que impulsó una guerra contra dicha alianza. A raíz de este hecho, se produjo un alzamiento militar que terminó con su vida. |
